How to Practice Yoga Meditation

Practicing yoga meditation is arguably the most important part of the practice of yoga, an aspect of it that goes beyond the poses and physical exercise associated with it. Meditation is the experience of the interconnectedness between every living thing. Being able to focus on that methodology, however, takes some practice. Here are a few tips for how to simply practice yoga meditation on your own:

 

Sit down on the floor or in a chair, with a cushion or blanket under your buttocks to keep yourself comfortable and keep it elevated. Then gently guide your knees down towards the floor, helping the natural lumbar curve of your spine. Then relax your arms and place your hands in your lap or on your thighs. Roll your shoulders back and lift up your chest, while keeping your neck long and chin tilted slightly downward. While many people close their eyes, you don’t have to. However breathing long and deeply is key, keeping the same fluid pace in your breath repeatedly throughout the meditation process. Do this for at least 5 minutes and see how you feel.
